# Depression Therapy

Depression can feel like heaviness, flatness, or a world gone gray. In our work together, we approach it gently, as a nervous system that may be protecting you by powering down.

Depression isn't always sadness. Sometimes it's an exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch. Sometimes it's numbness, or a sense of moving through your days behind glass. You might still be showing up for work, family, and everything else, while inside it takes enormous effort just to keep going.

I don't see depression as a personal failing or a lack of willpower. Like other symptoms, it can be an adaptive response. When life has asked too much of you for too long, or when earlier experiences taught your system that reaching out wasn't safe, shutting down can be a way of conserving energy and staying protected. We get curious about that, without judgment.

How it can feel

* * *

## Heavy, flat, or far away.

Depression shows up differently for everyone. You may notice:

- A heaviness in your body, or low energy that makes small tasks feel huge.
- Losing interest in things that used to matter or bring you joy.
- Feeling numb or disconnected, or unable to cry even when you want to.
- Changes in sleep or appetite.
- A harsh inner voice that says you're failing or not enough.
- Pulling away from people, even the ones you love.

If several of these feel familiar, you're not lazy and you're not broken. Your system may be doing its best with everything it has carried.

The trauma connection

* * *

## When shutting down was a way to survive.

For some people, depression is closely tied to past experiences. When fighting back or getting away wasn't possible, the nervous system can move toward collapse: going quiet, flat, and still. That response can protect you in the moment, and it can also linger for years afterward.

This is part of why I bring a trauma-informed lens to depression. If you also recognize patterns of numbness or detachment, the guide to dissociation and emotional numbness (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/dissociation-and-emotional-numbness) may help, as may reading about nervous system dysregulation (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/nervous-system-dysregulation).

How we work

* * *

## Gentle steps back toward feeling.

With depression, pushing harder rarely helps. We start where you are, and we go slowly. Somatic therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/somatic-based-therapy) helps us notice small signs of energy, warmth, or ease in the body and build on them, a little at a time.

Parts-centered work (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/parts-work) lets us get to know the hopeless, critical, or exhausted parts of you with curiosity, rather than trying to argue them out of how they feel. When it fits, the Safe and Sound Protocol (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/safe-and-sound-protocol), a listening-based intervention I'm certified to provide, or neurofeedback can serve as supports alongside our therapy.

If you're also working with a doctor or another provider, I'm glad to coordinate when that helps your care.

Who this is for

* * *

## Adults close to home and across the state.

Sessions are for adults 21 and older, at my Doylestown office or by secure telehealth across Pennsylvania and Arizona. On low-energy days, telehealth can make it possible to keep showing up for yourself without a drive or a waiting room. I have a soft spot for people in Bucks County and nearby Montgomery County (https://braveemberswellness.com/locations/montgomery-county-pa).

Reaching out when you feel depleted can be hard. A free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) keeps the first step small: a short, low-pressure conversation to see if working together feels right.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

Can therapy help if I've felt depressed for a long time?

Long-standing depression often has deep roots, and it deserves patient, careful attention. We take time to understand what your system has been carrying and move at a pace that feels manageable. There's no single timeline, and even small shifts are worth noticing.

What if I don't have the energy for therapy right now?

That's an understandable worry. Sessions can be gentle, and on some days the work may simply be noticing how you are without pushing for more. Telehealth can also lower the effort it takes to show up.

Do you prescribe medication for depression?

No. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I don't prescribe. If you're working with a prescriber, or wondering whether medication might be worth exploring, that conversation belongs with a medical provider, and I'm glad to coordinate when it helps.

Is depression always connected to trauma?

No. Not all depression comes from trauma, but shutdown and numbness can be part of how the nervous system responds to overwhelming experiences. We can explore whether that's part of your story, without assuming it is.
