# Binge Eating

Binge eating is not a failure of willpower. It's often a way of soothing, numbing, or surviving something that feels too big, and it deserves curiosity instead of shame.

Maybe it happens late at night, after a hard day, or when you're finally alone. You eat past the point of comfort, often quickly, often feeling disconnected from what you're doing. Afterward the shame arrives, along with promises to do better tomorrow. And then the cycle starts again.

If that sounds familiar, there's nothing wrong with your character. As part of my work with eating disorders and disordered eating (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/eating-disorder-therapy), I see binge eating as an adaptive response: a part of you reaching for relief in the most available way it knows. In our work together, we get curious about what that part is carrying.

What it can look like

* * *

## A cycle, not a character flaw.

Binge eating looks different from person to person. You may notice:

- Eating large amounts of food while feeling unable to stop.
- Eating in secret, or hiding the evidence afterward.
- Feeling numb, foggy, or checked out during a binge.
- Intense shame, guilt, or self-criticism afterward.
- Cycles of strict dieting or restriction followed by bingeing.
- Using food to cope with stress, loneliness, anger, or overwhelm.

If you also purge or compensate after bingeing, the page on bulimia and binge-purge cycles (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/bulimia-therapy) may speak to you too. If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing counts, the guide to signs of disordered eating (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/signs-of-disordered-eating) may help.

Why diets backfire

* * *

## Restriction often feeds the cycle.

Plenty of people who binge have spent years trying to control it with diets, rules, and willpower. It makes sense to try. But restriction can leave the body and mind feeling deprived, which can make the pull toward bingeing even stronger. Shame after a binge can then fuel another round of restriction.

That's one reason this is a weight-inclusive (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/weight-inclusive-therapy) practice. No one will weigh you here, and our work isn't about weight loss or calorie math. It's about understanding the cycle and what sits underneath it.

How we work

* * *

## Curiosity about what food is doing for you.

Together, we slow down and look at the moments before, during, and after a binge with compassion. Parts-centered work (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/parts-work) helps us get to know the part that reaches for food and the part that criticizes you afterward, so neither one has to run the show alone.

Somatic work helps you notice hunger, fullness, and overwhelm in your body, and builds other ways to soothe a system that's stretched thin. When it fits, ERP and experiential practices can help with urges, and EMDR can help with experiences that may sit underneath the pattern.

If it helps your care, I'm glad to coordinate with a dietitian or medical provider.

Body image and shame

* * *

## Making room for the whole story.

Binge eating and body image struggles are often tangled together. If you find yourself caught in harsh judgments about your body, we can work with that too, gently and without appearance talk. You can learn more about body image therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/body-image-therapy).

I work with adults 21 and older in person in Doylestown or by secure telehealth across Pennsylvania and Arizona. You don't need a diagnosis to reach out, and you don't need to have it figured out. A free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) is a low-pressure place to start.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

Is binge eating a real eating disorder?

Yes. Binge eating disorder is a recognized eating disorder, and binge eating can also show up without meeting full criteria. Either way, you deserve support. You don't need a diagnosis for your struggles with food to matter.

Will therapy focus on helping me lose weight?

No. This is a weight-inclusive practice, and our work isn't about changing the size of your body. We focus on the binge cycle, the feelings and experiences underneath it, and your relationship with food and your body.

Why do I binge even when I'm not hungry?

Binge eating is often less about physical hunger and more about what's happening emotionally or in your nervous system. Food can soothe, numb, or distract from feelings that seem too big. Understanding what each binge is trying to do for you is a central part of our work.

Can binge eating therapy happen by telehealth?

Yes. Sessions are available by secure video as well as in person at my Doylestown office. Some people find it easier to talk about food from home, while others prefer the separation an office provides, and you can choose what feels right.
