# Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety is often a nervous system that learned to stay on guard. Therapy can give it a chance to discover, slowly and safely, that it doesn't have to work so hard.

Maybe your mind won't stop running through what could go wrong. Maybe your chest tightens before a phone call, or you lie awake replaying a conversation. Maybe you look calm from the outside while something inside never quite powers down. Anxiety shows up differently for everyone, and it isn't a sign that you're weak or doing life wrong.

I see anxiety the way I see most symptoms: as an adaptive response. At some point, staying alert helped keep you safe. The trouble is that a protective system can stay switched on long after the danger has passed. In our work together, we get curious about what your anxiety is trying to do for you, and we give your body real chances to experience rest.

How it shows up

* * *

## More than worry.

Anxiety lives in the body as much as in the mind. You may notice:

- Racing or looping thoughts, especially at night.
- A tight chest, shallow breathing, or a stomach that's always in knots.
- Scanning a room, a face, or an inbox for signs of trouble.
- Avoiding places, people, or tasks because the dread feels too big.
- Irritability, restlessness, or trouble concentrating.
- Exhaustion from holding everything together.

When anxiety is tangled up with past experiences, it can feel out of proportion to what's happening now. That isn't irrational. It's a nervous system responding to old information.

Why insight isn't enough

* * *

## You can't think your way out of an alarm.

Plenty of people with anxiety already understand their patterns. They can explain exactly why a worry doesn't make sense and still feel it everywhere. That's because anxiety is driven by the nervous system, which responds to felt safety more than to logic.

So we work with the body as well as the mind. With somatic therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/somatic-based-therapy), we notice how anxiety moves through you, slow it down, and build small experiences of settling. With parts-centered work (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/parts-work), we get to know the worried or watchful part of you instead of fighting it. If you'd like to understand what's happening underneath, the guide to the window of tolerance (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/window-of-tolerance) is a good place to start.

Tools that may help

## Support that fits your system.

Depending on what's driving your anxiety, we might bring in more structured approaches. Exposure and Response Prevention (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/exposure-and-response-prevention-therapy-erp) was developed for OCD and is also used with some forms of anxiety. It helps your system learn, step by step, that it can stay with discomfort without needing to escape. I never use it as a stand-alone technique, and we always build resources first.

Biofeedback can be a helpful support too. HeartMath (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/heartmath) uses simple tools to make the rhythm between your breath and heart visible, so you can practice a steadier state in real time. Tools like these sit inside our therapy, never in place of it.

If your anxiety feels more like a whole-body pattern of going from zero to a hundred, you may also want to read about nervous system dysregulation (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/nervous-system-dysregulation).

Who this is for

* * *

## Adults in Bucks County and beyond.

I work with adults 21 and older, in person at my office in Doylestown or by secure telehealth across Pennsylvania and Arizona. I have a soft spot for people close to home in Bucks County and Montgomery County (https://braveemberswellness.com/locations/montgomery-county-pa), where a telehealth session over lunch or between commitments can make steady care realistic.

Anxiety often shows up alongside trauma, an eating disorder, or a big life change, and we can work with all of it together. A free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) is a simple, low-pressure way to see whether we're a fit.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

What kinds of anxiety do you work with?

I work with adults whose anxiety shows up as constant worry, physical tension, sudden surges of panic, avoidance, or a sense of never being able to relax. I'm especially attuned to anxiety that is connected to trauma, eating disorders, or a nervous system that has been on alert for a long time.

Will I have to face my fears right away?

No. If exposure-based work fits your goals, we build up to it gradually and only after you have resources for staying steady. You always have a say in the pace, and we can pause or change direction at any point.

Do I need an anxiety diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You don't need a formal diagnosis to deserve support. If anxiety is shaping your days, your sleep, or your relationships, that's reason enough to reach out and talk about what might help.

Is anxiety therapy better in person or by telehealth?

Either can work well, and the right choice depends on you. Some people settle more easily at home, while others appreciate the clear separation of an office. Sessions are available at my Doylestown office and by secure video, and we can talk about what suits you.
