# What to Expect in Trauma Therapy

If you're considering trauma therapy, not knowing what happens next can be its own source of worry. Here's an honest look at how the work usually unfolds with me.

Plenty of people put off trauma therapy because they imagine having to tell the worst parts of their story right away, or being pushed to feel more than they can handle. In my practice, it works the other way around. Trauma therapy begins with safety, moves at your pace, and treats your nervous system as a partner rather than an obstacle.

This guide walks through what you can expect when you work with me on complex trauma and PTSD (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/trauma-ptsd-therapy). Every person's path is different, so think of it as a map rather than a schedule.

Before you begin

* * *

## It starts with a conversation.

Every new client begins with a free telehealth consultation. It's a brief, low-pressure chance to talk about what's bringing you in, ask how I work, and get a feel for whether we're a fit. You don't need to share details of what happened. You can read more about the free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) and how to book it.

If you decide to move forward, we'll schedule individual therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/individual-therapy). Sessions are 60 to 90 minutes, usually weekly to start, either in person in Doylestown or by secure telehealth.

The first sessions

* * *

## Getting oriented.

The early sessions are about getting to know you. We talk about who you are, what you're hoping for, what you've tried before, and what has or hasn't helped. We also notice the resources already in your life: people, places, practices, and parts of yourself that help you feel steadier.

This stage can feel slower than you expect, and that's intentional. Building safety and understanding your nervous system creates the foundation the deeper work rests on.

The pace

* * *

## Safety before the hard material.

You won't be asked to dive into your hardest memories before you're ready. Much of trauma work happens in the present: noticing what your body does under stress, getting to know protective parts of you, and building ways to come back to steadiness.

When it's time to approach painful experiences, we do it gradually, and only when your system has the resources to stay present. Approaches like somatic therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/somatic-based-therapy), EMDR, and parts-centered work let us process what happened without retelling every detail. The window of tolerance (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/window-of-tolerance) is a helpful idea for understanding why this pacing matters.

You'll always know why we're doing what we're doing, and you can pause or change direction at any point.

Along the way

* * *

## What the middle can feel like.

Trauma therapy isn't a straight line. Some weeks you may leave a session feeling lighter. Other weeks you may feel tired, tender, or stirred up as old feelings move. That doesn't mean something has gone wrong. It's one reason we pace the work carefully and build in ways to settle.

Shifts often begin small: a reaction that's a little less intense, a moment of pause before an old pattern kicks in, a bit more curiosity toward yourself. Those quiet changes count.

How long it takes

* * *

## Your history sets the pace.

There's no set number of sessions. The length of trauma therapy depends on your history, your current resources, and your goals. Work with complex or long-standing trauma tends to be longer-arc, while a specific, more recent experience may need less time.

Later on, you might consider adding a private intensive (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/private-therapy-intensives), a focused one to three day format, when you want to go deep on one piece without waiting a week between sessions. If you're still comparing options, the guide on how to choose a trauma therapist (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/how-to-choose-a-trauma-therapist) may help.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

Will I have to talk about my trauma in the first session?

No. The first sessions focus on getting to know you, your goals, and the resources in your life. We approach painful material only when you're ready and your system has enough support, and you decide how much to share.

Is it normal to feel worse before I feel better?

Feeling stirred up at times is common, especially as you begin to notice feelings you've kept at a distance. Careful pacing exists for exactly this reason. We watch for it together and slow down whenever we need to.

How often will we meet?

Sessions usually start weekly, which helps build momentum and a sense of safety, and they run 60 to 90 minutes. We can revisit the rhythm as the work evolves and your needs change.

Do I need a diagnosis to start trauma therapy?

No. You don't need a formal diagnosis of PTSD or anything else. If past experiences are shaping how you feel, react, or relate to others today, that's reason enough to explore trauma therapy.
