# Weight-Inclusive Therapy

In this practice, no one will weigh you, measure you, or ask you to track. We work with what's underneath the food, the body, and the shame.

For many people with eating disorders or body image struggles, the scale, the measuring tape, and the food log have been sources of pain for years. Even in places meant to help, conversations centered on weight can reinforce the very thinking that keeps an eating disorder going.

This is a weight-inclusive practice. That means care that doesn't hinge on the size of your body, and therapy that treats every body as worthy of respect and support. It's the foundation of my work with eating disorders and disordered eating (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/eating-disorder-therapy) and with body image (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/body-image-therapy).

What it means

* * *

## What you won't find here.

Weight-inclusive care is easiest to understand through what it leaves out. In our work together:

- You will never be weighed or measured.
- You won't be asked to track food, numbers, or calories.
- There are no before-and-after stories and no size talk.
- Body image work stays away from appearance talk.
- Therapy isn't built around a meal plan, and progress isn't measured by your weight.

None of this means food and bodies are off-limits. We talk about them often. We just talk about them differently.

Why it matters

* * *

## Every body deserves the same care.

Eating disorders and body image struggles happen in bodies of every size. When care centers on weight, people in larger bodies can be overlooked, or even praised for behaviors that are hurting them, while people whose weight looks typical may be told they aren't sick enough to need help.

A weight-inclusive approach takes your suffering seriously regardless of your size. It also removes a constant source of comparison and judgment from the therapy room, which can make it easier to tell the truth about what's really going on.

My Resources page (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources) includes size-inclusive health resources and books on body respect if you'd like to read more.

What we focus on

* * *

## What's underneath the food.

Instead of numbers, we pay attention to what the eating disorder or body image struggle is doing for you. We work with the felt sense in your body, the parts of you that use food to cope, and the beliefs about worth and safety that may have been installed a long time ago.

That might involve somatic therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/somatic-based-therapy) to rebuild trust with hunger and fullness, parts-centered work with an inner critic, or EMDR for memories of body shame. The page on binge eating (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/binge-eating-therapy) shows how this approach applies to bingeing, and the page on trauma and eating disorders (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/trauma-and-eating-disorders) explores the deeper roots.

Safety still matters

* * *

## Weight-inclusive doesn't mean ignoring health.

Choosing not to focus on weight in therapy doesn't mean physical health is ignored. Eating disorders can affect the body seriously, and medical care is an important part of safety. If your recovery would benefit from a team, I'm happy to work alongside a dietitian and medical provider. Some people need a higher level of care first, and we can talk honestly about what fits where you are.

I work with adults 21 and older, in person in Doylestown and by secure telehealth. If you're curious whether this approach fits you, a free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) is an easy place to ask.

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

Does weight-inclusive mean we never talk about food or my body?

No. Food and your body are often central to our conversations. We simply approach them without numbers, appearance talk, or judgment, focusing instead on your experience, your feelings, and what your body is communicating.

Is weight-inclusive therapy only for people in larger bodies?

No. It's for people in every body. Eating disorders and body image struggles affect people of all sizes, and everyone deserves care that doesn't make their worth depend on a number.

What if part of me wants to lose weight?

That's an honest feeling, and you're welcome to bring it. Weight loss isn't a goal of therapy here. We can explore the feelings and pressures behind that wish with curiosity rather than judgment, at your pace.

Will you coordinate with my dietitian or doctor?

When it helps your care, yes. Depending on where you are in recovery, working alongside a dietitian and medical provider means you're supported from more than one direction, with everyone focused on the same goals.
