# EMDR for Eating Disorders

Sometimes the hardest moments around food and body trace back to memories that never finished processing. EMDR offers a careful way to work with them.

A comment about your body when you were young. The way food was handled at your family's table. A moment of being shamed, watched, or controlled. For many people with eating disorders, certain memories still feel strangely present, as if they're happening now rather than then. They can shape how you see your body and what you do with food today.

EMDR (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/eye-movement-desensitization-and-reprocessing-emdr-therapy) is one of the ways we can work with those memories. It's never a replacement for nutrition and medical safety, and it's never the first thing we do. Inside a paced, weight-inclusive approach, though, it can help the past begin to feel more like the past.

What it is

* * *

## Helping the brain file what got stuck.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or alternating taps or tones, alongside a clear protocol. The aim is to help distressing memories lose some of their emotional charge so they can be stored as something that happened, not something still happening.

With eating disorders, the memories we work with are often quieter than a single big event. We might focus on an early experience of body shame, a moment when food became a way to cope, the first time a rule felt like safety, or a recent trigger that set off a familiar spiral.

How I use it

* * *

## Preparation comes first.

I completed S.A.F.E. EMDR training through the Personal Transformation Institute. It is a somatic and attachment-focused way of doing EMDR, which means we pay close attention to your body and to the relational side of what happened, not only to the memory itself.

Before any reprocessing, we build resources: ways to settle your nervous system, an understanding of the parts of you that use food to cope, and enough stability in daily life that deeper work won't knock you off your feet. We stay inside your window of tolerance (https://braveemberswellness.com/resources/window-of-tolerance) throughout. Along the way, you can expect:

- A clear explanation of each step before we take it.
- The freedom to pause or stop whenever you need to.
- Somatic and parts-centered work woven in as needed.
- A pace that respects what your nervous system can take in.

Where it fits

## One part of a bigger picture.

In my practice, EMDR for eating disorders always sits inside a broader plan. Alongside it, we might use somatic therapy to rebuild trust with hunger and fullness, parts-centered work (https://braveemberswellness.com/approaches/parts-work) with the protector that restricts or binges, and experiential practices that let you show rather than tell. Because this is a weight-inclusive practice, there's no weighing, no size talk, and no calorie math in any of it.

When your recovery calls for a treatment team, I'm glad to coordinate with a dietitian and medical provider. EMDR can help with what sits underneath an eating disorder, but nutrition and physical safety still matter, and they come first when they need to.

If body image is at the center of what you're carrying, you may also want to read about body image therapy (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/body-image-therapy) or how trauma and eating disorders (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/trauma-and-eating-disorders) connect.

Getting started

* * *

## In person or by telehealth.

EMDR can happen in person at my Doylestown office or by secure telehealth. Bilateral stimulation adapts well to video, so you can do this work from a private space where you feel grounded, anywhere in Pennsylvania or Arizona.

If you're curious whether EMDR might help with your relationship to food and your body, a free consultation (https://braveemberswellness.com/services/free-consultation) is a good place to ask. You can also explore my broader approach to eating disorders and disordered eating (https://braveemberswellness.com/specialties/eating-disorder-therapy).

Common questions

* * *

## What people ask.

Can EMDR treat an eating disorder on its own?

I don't use EMDR as a stand-alone treatment for eating disorders. It works with the memories and beliefs underneath the behaviors, while other parts of care, like nutrition support, medical monitoring, and ongoing therapy, look after daily safety and change. Together those pieces make a fuller plan.

Will I have to relive painful memories?

No. The goal is reprocessing, not reliving. You remain in charge of the pace, we keep one foot in the present, and we only approach difficult material once you have enough resources to stay steady while we do.

What if I'm not ready to stop eating disorder behaviors yet?

That's okay. Ambivalence is part of the story, and we don't need to resolve it before we begin. We may spend more time on stabilization and on understanding what the behaviors do for you before EMDR becomes a good fit.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

It depends on what you're bringing and what else is happening in your life. Some pieces shift in a handful of sessions, while experiences tied to long-standing patterns usually take longer. We'll revisit the plan together as we go.
